What is Mirena?

Mirena is an intrauterine device (IUD) — a type of contraceptive that is implanted in a woman’s uterus. It works by releasing a synthetic hormone called levonorgestrel, and prevents pregnancy for up to five years. Mirena is sold by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. It was approved by the FDA in 2000 and is used by more than 2 million women in the U.S.

Side Effects of Mirena

Mirena is associated with some serious side effects and complications. Although rare, these side effects can cause severe pain, debilitation, permanent infertility, and may require surgery. Severe infections can be life-threatening.

One serious complication is uterine perforation. This can occur if Mirena embeds itself in the uterus or erodes into the uterine wall. A perforated uterus can cause severe pain. If it is not diagnosed, Mirena can also migrate outside the uterus, into the abdomen, and perforate organs. If these serious complications occur, surgery is usually necessary.

If you suffered from this severe Mirena complication, you may qualify for a lawsuit. Side effects of Mirena include:

  • Migration of Mirena
  • Perforation of the uterus
  • Embedment / erosion into the uterine wall
  • Organ damage
  • Intestinal perforation
  • Abscess, scarring
  • Infertility
  • Need for corrective surgery
  • And more
